Two Gringos
In the early 1970s Joan Dittrich, my cousin, went out west to California to visit our aunt Jane Nyberg (Karpinski). They took a side trip to Tijuana, where photo opportunitys like this were commonplace, and perhaps still are. It came in a cardboard holder which said on the inside, “If you don’t [like] the picture, [...]

View of Trenton
This rooftop view of Trenton was taken, I believe, in the late 1940s or 1950s. I’m not sure from where though. The twin spires in the distance (slightly left of the center smokestack in the picture, at the horizon) may be of Trenton Cathedral, in which case the pic was taken in Chambersburg or thereabouts. Or [...]

Mexican Thanksgiving
Today I cooked some enchiladas with chicken and pineapple, with mole sauce on top, some sour cream, & grated cheese. It was a good experiment and unusual for a Thanksgiving day dinner I guess.

The Popoki
This is Popoki. Twice. He was so cute when he was a kitten. Now he is large and complains a lot. He has a bent tail, and is part Siamese. He looked a lot mor Siamese when he was a kitten. He talks a lot. He always has a lot to say.

The Chiqui
This is Setsuko, aka as The Chiqui. She is stretching luxuriously as cats are wont to do. She is perhaps the cutest cat I have ever had, a bit fiery in temperament, but her sheer etherealness and elfiness makes up for it. According to the co-worker who gave her to me, her dad was black [...]

Bathroom Reno
The bathroom renovation is progressing. I still need a new sink basin and have to put in the floor molding, but it’s a lot better than it was. (I have not taken a ‘before’ picture because I didn’t want to scare anyone.) The part of the room behind the door, where the tub is, still needs work, [...]

The Gorda
This is Peanut (aka The Gorda) who is sleeping off a hard night of… sleeping. She is not especially intelligent but is a very good-natured cat, with a demeanor of “Hey, no big deal.” Her favorite hobbies are eating, sitting on the back of the couch, eating, rolling around on the neighbor’s concrete step, eating, [...]

Blood Sausage
They call this moranaga or relleno in Mexico. The casing is the intestine of a cow. It is not bad fried in olive oil with thin slices of potato and onion — the flavor is spicy, like that of chorizo. I didn’t think I would like it, but I did. Spanish blood sausage is different, [...]

The Hawaiian Plate Lunch
Tracy asked me to say something about the Plate Lunch.
These days people are trying to eat healthier, so you can actually get a small side of tossed green salad with your Plate Lunch. But the traditional Plate Lunch is a veritable treasure trove of fat, starch, cholesterol and sodium. Which is what makes it so [...]

Squash, the King of the Vegetables
I thought I’d share some my favorite Autumn recipes.
.
Easy Baked Squash
Autumn squash (I like Acorn, Delicata, Carnival, and Kubota)
Butter (If you want a low-cal dish substitute a light film of olive oil)
Salt & Pepper
Chopped onion, any kind
Other seasonings, as desired
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Half squashes and scoop out the seeds and pulp. Make a [...]
