Paint by Number
Sometimes you just have to look on the back shelves at the craft store to find the oddest things…

Polish Glass Ornaments
These are my Christmas ornaments. Each is about 9″ tall. I’m going to hang them in the kitchen, which has a sort of spacy theme.

Space Tree
This is my first attempt to use a bamboo plant as a Christmas tree. But let me go to the beginning…
Hawaii is a beautiful place, but it is too warm here to grow “real” Christmas trees. So sometime around Halloween, they cut down real Christmas trees in Washington and Oregon. They put them in a [...]

Helen, Lottie, and Walter
Helen Dittrich, Lottie Delgaudio, and their father Walter Karpinski pose on a couch in Lottie’s Red Bank, New Jersey living room in 1965. This was another of those old faded, yellow photos that I cleaned up in Photoshop. To appreciate the job I did, the original is here.
The photo is interesting because Grandpop seems grumpy [...]

Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding
(This holiday desert was made by thrifty Minnesota farming families as a way to use up yesterday’s stale bread. Some people save bread in the freezer all year long for this.)
4 cups (1 quart) day-old bread, cut into cubes 1/2″ to 1″ in size

3 cups milk
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup raisins, soaked in water
3/4 cup chopped, [...]

Images of Mexican Santas are here and here.
Hawaiian Santas wear flipflops and sunglasses.

She’s Such a Poser
This badly yellowed (since adjusted in Photoshop) print is of Jane Nyberg (Karpinski) on a trip to… somewhere, I think France or Italy. She is clowning around with some roughly hewn statues of classical origin — I get a sense of Rodin or Giacommeti from them, but they could be Greek or Italian replicas. The era [...]

Eighty Years Ago…
… this was what my neighborhood in Seattle looked like, 15 blocks south and a few blocks west of my house. The craftsman house pictured was one of the few that existed in the 1910s in an area of cleared farms and stands of still-extent evergreen forest. I think the fencing in front is a chicken pen. [...]

Italian Spiderman
Did you know the Italians made the first Spiderman movie, back in the swingin’ sixties, complete with cheesy organ music, hookah-smoking hippies, and Mexican wrestling masks?
I didn’t either.
