Houseguests
I love having company, even if it means running back and forth to the airport 3 times in one evening!
Some of Violet’s friends from school are here on an exchange program. They all came in at different times last Sunday, but left on the same flight to Maui the next day.
It was fun fitting 3 [...]

Greetings from Cuernavaca
Hola from wonderful Cuernavaca. It is called The City of Eternal Spring and now that I am here I see why. The buildings are very old and made of volcanic stone, some dating from the 1500s, like the palace of Hernan Cortes we are going to see today. In the plaza before it there is [...]

RCA Workers in Camden, New Jersey
I found this pic on the Library of Congress site detailed below. It was taken during the WWII years or slightly before at the RCA plant in Camden, New Jersey, across the river from Philadelphia. It was someone’s retirement party there.
On my last trip to NJ Valerie Dittrich told me stories of how some [...]

Trenton Panorama, 1909
A panoramic view of Trenton, New Jersey from 1909 — nearly 100 years ago! — found in the American Memory collection at the Library of Congress website. This is a government website with all sorts of historical photos, videos, and music — I highly recommend it.
The picture makes sense if you read it right to left — [...]

Howard Edward Warner
My father Howard Edward Warner in his mid to late twenties I guess, so it would have been taken shortly after WWII when he returned from service. Handsome devil, no? I see a resemblance to other male members of the family particularly in the bone structure around the eyes and forehead. You can’t tell from [...]

Karpinski Men
Henry and Walter Karpinski, and Howard Warner, socialize in the backyard of the Karpinskis’ St. Joseph’s Ave. house. My dad was about 6 feet tall, so you can how much shorter the other two are. The photo looks like it was snapped in the late 1940s shortly after, or before, Howard and Virginia were married. Grandpop is wearing [...]

Family Surnames and Heraldry, Part II
The name Dittrich is derived from the Germanic personal name Tederich (Theudoricus), composed of the elements theud ‘people’, ‘race’ + rīc ‘power(ful)’, ‘rich’. Some interpret this as “Sovereign of the People.” Variations include Dieterich, Dietrich, Diedrick, etc. This surname was widespread in the Austria-Hungary region of Europe, including Silesia and southwest Poland.
The coat of [...]

Mod Girl
This pic probably goes with the description below… it’s me and my mother, Virginia Warner, on a boat cruise on the Rhine River in Germany, August 1970. I didn’t care for the pink crocheted hat and vest at the time, but I have to admit I look very cute in it. My mom was into [...]

What is a Girl?
I found this in a thrift store in Seattle. The fine print at the bottom says it was distributed by the Home Health Education Service of Portland, Oregon. I’m thinking they gave it away to all mothers of newborn baby girls there once upon a time. The design is very 1950s. Click to read the larger [...]

Christmas in Downtown Trenton, 1958
Here’s some old pictures that may be of interest to everyone — downtown Trenton during Christmas — in 1958! I think my dad (Howard Warner) took these and developed them in his new darkroom on Lalor St. The contrast of the prints is very fine, and details are easily discernible. These photos illustrate how busy [...]
