The Campbells of Hawaii
I love going to the big annual book sale that the state library has every July. It’s held at Mckinley High School, in the cafeteria. It’s not air conditioned, and every table is loaded with books. Thee are books on shelves along the walls, and in boxes under the tables. I used to go on [...]

Slices of Life in Mexico, Part 2
Did you know Mexico has its own version on Venice? It’s called Xochimilco, and it’s a suburb of Mexico City. The Country Bunny
Since it’s nearing Easter I thought I’d post a pic from another of my vintage children’s books. The illustrations [...]

Slices of Life in Mexico, Part 1
One of the things I realized in Mexico is that The Cult of The Baby is alive and well. Most children not of walkable age are toted around in the arms of their parents, not in a wheeled conveyance. In part this is because the sidewalks and public transportation are too uneven and crowded for strollers, making [...]

Frida Kahlo
One thing I learned in Mexico was that artist Frida Kahlo has been adopted as the patron saint of Mexican art. In Mexico one can see her everywhere. For example, a paper mache skeleton of her stands in the Palacio del Cortes in Cuernavaca, before a mural painted by her husband Diego Rivera… the sculpture [...]
