Dragon Species

I’ve always liked to draw dragons, but the obsession slowed down when I entered high school. It experienced a brief resurgeance in college, when I became interested in the AD&D role-playing game. These are my interpretations of the various dragon types, done in watercolor, during the semester I took the bulk of my illustration classes at TSC. Clockwise, from upper left: Black dragon, Brass dragons showing sexual dimorphism (female on top, male below), White dragon, Silver dragon. Notice the heraldic poses of all these creatures. They would be right at home on a European coat of arms.
The Black dragon is my favorite — it shows a scheming, evil, greedy personality in this depiction. The Silver dragon OTOH looks offended and/or clueless, and the White dragon just mean.

Hey! I think that black dragon is the one on the painting I took from my Mom’s cellar many years ago. Mom told me Tracy had painted it, but then tried to throw it away, so she rescued it. Which was a kind of strange thing for my Mom to do. She wasn’t really into art, or dragons. It was kind of violent and dark. There was blood involved. I hung it over the dining table.
Alas, the house burned down, and the painting became even darker. Covered in sort of soot, I guess, but I rescued it one more time. I then read the feng sgui book about how you’re not supposed to have pictures of birds of prey inside your house. I wasn’t sure how a dragon fit into that, but I figure they fly, and they are predators, so better not take any chances. The picture went out into the lanai area.
A big wind came up one day, and knocked the picture over. I guess the canvas had been weakend by the fire, and it ripped in several places. Big rips. Unrepairable rips.
But I still have it, tattered and torn as it may be. Some day, I WILL salvage it, tape it back together and clean it up good as new.
But I won’t put it in he hosue over the dining table.

You are right! I just like that type of dragon. It is my version of this one by artist Tim Kirk.
I did not like that painting so much, but I am sad to hear its of its slow demise. It reminds me we are all growing older.
