Peanuts Cookbook
A few weeks ago I went to an antique mall that I used to frequent in the past, but hadn’t visited in a while. I found this cookbook there and knew I had to have it. It’s the same one I had as a child in 1972 — the first recipes I ever made on [...]

Dancers
I, along with my cousins, attended Irene Parker’s School of Dance located on South Broad St. near Hamilton High School. It was an unassuming Cape Cod house on top, but the basement was finished and lined with mirrors and wooden balance bars. A very large volume of kids must have passed through because huge dance [...]

You and Your Mixmaster
These days, KitchenAid mixers rule the kitchen appliance roost, with their sleek design, multiple attachments, and multiple color choices (red, blue, silver, pink, tangerine, etc.) But back in the 1930s the Sunbeam brand, manufactured by the Chicago Flexible Shaft company, was number one.
This 1937 booklet was given away to customers who bought a new [...]

Camping at Allaire
Warners and Dittrichs Camping at Allaire State Park
A little over 40 years ago the Warners and Dittrichs decided to pool their resources and go camping one August in the Pine Barrens. The women and children hung out there during the week, with the menfolk joining them on weekends. We stayed in old-fashioned canvas tents and [...]

A Saucer Full of Secrets
This pic was labeled “The Mothership.” It is from the Dittrich slide collection. It is obviously a mock-up UFO, but the mystery is to what purpose. Was it an experimental modern dwelling? A museum? A roadside attraction? Part of a movie set? The answers have been lost in time.

Ramen Noodles
Kurt Warner, Barbara Dittrich, and Frank DelGaudio having lunch on Oahu
When you think about it ramen noodles must have been as exotic in the mid-1960s as broiled wild-caught blowfish with juniper and jicama sorbet is today. Back then even spaghetti and meatballs was considered an exotic ethnic meal. If you ate Japanese food, you were [...]

Peter Pan Peanut Butter
I love the crayon-like primary colors and 1950s kitchen scene on the cover of this booklet. Saturated sky blue, mustard yellow, jungle green, lipstick red, and a shiny metal toaster … what is not to adore. Add to that a pair of concerned, hand-wringing parents and a slack-jawed little boy who is clearly in awe that the magical Peter Pan has [...]
