Visitor Industry Charity Walk 2009
Once again we did “The Walk”. Every stop along the way, as you get your card stamped, you also get a little food treat. We all carry backpacks to stash some of them, because you get so many . This year two of Violet’s friends from college, Jen and Claire [...]

Planing/Deplaning
Air travel has changed a lot over the years. In 1970, before the era of modern jet terminals, passengers planed and deplaned through mobile staircases driven up to where the jet sat on the tarmac (like the American president still does today.) This one unzipped into two sections so it was for a pretty big [...]

Urban Livestock: Chickens
It is perfectly legal to keep chickens within the City of Seattle as long as they don’t have a rooster among them. But these brave city pioneers ran out of room, so they set up shop on the sidewalk strip next to the street.
I am not sure it’s a good idea for chickens to be [...]

Tailor Tot
Barbara Dittrich at Hetzle Park, Trenton, 1952
You kids today have it so easy. Soft comfortable baby scooters ergonomically designed, some with cushions, even. All in bright happy colors. Bah. When we were kids, we were brought up to be tough. No namby pamby molded plastic for us! We sat our heinies down on raw metal! [...]

Feeding the Deer
After church on Sundays it was always fun to drive to Cadwalader (”Catwalter”) Park to run, play, and feed the deer. They were penned up at the bottom of a small ravine and visitors were allowed to feed them, and the deer were very eager to be fed. We always took stale bread and carrots. [...]

Bellows Beach
A friend of mine rented a cabin at Bellows Beach for a week. We went to visit and spent a beautiful day at the beach.
Violet had fun!
Violet and I had fun!
Even Mr. Crabbie had fun!
No day at the beach is complete without a barbecue and a cold beverage. This is Violet’s friend Claire enjoying both.

Strawberry Shortcake
Joan Dittrich, September 1973
Joan chows down on some strawberry shortcake. I think it was my tenth birthday party around Labor Day because she’s wearing shorts and my brother has no shirt on. She looks more than a little surprised.

Mowin’ Man
Jackson Howard DeBolt at age 3, Spring 1975
My nephew Jack “mowing” the lawn with a toy plastic lawnmower. This kid was obsessed with lawn care. I don’t know if it was the noise or the sight of the grass getting cut that attracted him, but that’s all he wanted to do from ages 3 through [...]

Local Art: My Little Garden
Not far from where I live I found this small sidewalk garden and took some pics of it. Lettuce is growing in the wheelbarrow, tomatoes and pea vines are in the metal boxes, and what looks like artichokes or mesclun in the tub to the left. Near the front wheel of the wheelbarrow are some [...]

Local Art: Chair of Pain
This sculpture appeared one day last winter at the end of my street, in a small triangular lot by the Petco that is occupied at its south end by a Java Jump espresso stand and at its north end by a Christmas tree vendor. I can’t help but think it was made of leftover Christmas [...]
