Tomato Crop 2009, Part II
Black from Tula, a mouth-watering “black” (really mixed red & green) Russian tomato the size of my closed fist. This was the soft, smoky-flavored tomato you might grill under the broiler to eat with your breakfast eggs.

Ciggies
Cigarette smoking was not always frowned upon as it is today. In fact, it was a glamorous and sometimes necessary part of everyday life. Here are some pictures I’ve found of cigarettes and those who smoked them from over the years…
That’s one of Mom’s old boyfriends, Snag, in the middle with [...]

Purple and Black
I always liked this outfit, even though I wore it only once, in Scotland. Black shoes, black Esprit blazer and skirt, purple shirt and tights. My new wave punked out hair goes with it (it didn’t exactly go with the billowy Australian outback-inspired fashions I also favored, though.)

Tomato Crop 2009, Part I
Three of the first tomato varieties to ripen. From top right: Chocolate Cherry, Orange Banana, Old German. They did well but I did not get quite so many fruits as I thought I would because I planted late. The Orange Banana tasted the best.
My mom was also a big tomato grower as this pic attests. [...]

Haven’t you got a ‘gnome’ to go to?
Look what I found sleeping in the garden.
Apparently he followed me home from the local thrift shop. Shhh! Don’t wake him up. That’s bad luck you know.

Each color had its own flavor. The orange ones were the most typically carroty, while the yellow ones were mellower. The white ones had a radish-like spicy nip to them. The red ones [...]

The Glamour of Cher
In fifth and sixth grades I faithfully watched the Sonny and Cher show every week and drew dozens of pictures of Cher in some slinky or outlandish costume. Here she sings before a giant orange moon as pink mist swirls in the background. The glittery fabric is delineated, comic-book style, by tiny sparkling stars.
I only [...]

Those waves were cold.
So cold I needed support from my mom in order to withstand them washing across my toes. Jeanne is standing on the other side, already acclimated.
So I wonder: were the summers really cooler back then?

Alfred the Penny
I wrote this short story when I was 12 or 13. I think the assignment was to write a story about the thoughts of an inanimate object.
I remember my good friend Alfred. One day we were lying in the purse and Alfred says to me, “Hey Ralph! Guess what! A train ticket told me we’re [...]
