Did Someone Mention Herman’s Hermits?
The Summer of ’65 was very intense, as Summers should be. Not only did I dance on the Steel Pier, I also went there to see Herman’s Hermits! It was very hot that day, and we got there early so we could be right up close to the stage. There were no seats, we just [...]

Green Lion
I drew this lion on a piece of cardboard at age 5, using oil pastels. I guess I must have smeared them on my clothes, because I don’t think I was ever allowed to use them again. Even though a mane is present the lion is female, because she has a purse and is carrying [...]

The Pause That Refreshes
My mom drinks a glass of water at the kitchen sink. It’s only from looking at old pictures that I discovered she liked to wear her hair in two braids pinned up in the back or top.

There’s a swingin’ band playing in the background, complete with trumpet player, guitar player or saxophonist (behind mydad) and what looks like a drummer, though maybe he’s a guest smoking a really long cigar. The men look Italian so I’m guessing [...]

I Seafood, I Edith.
Two seafood booklets from different times, different states. California’s dates from 1930 and contains a pretty exhaustive repertoire of recipes for everything from tuna to mussels. The cover is attractive and subdued, if unappetizing. Maybe they like cold herring in Scandinavia? Some basic recipes. Washington’s seafood promotion booklet is from the mid-1960s and like many [...]

Wild Party
That was some wild party. My mom is in the background, wearing a triple strand of pearls and grinning. But who were the other participants, where was it, and why?

Parakeet Peter
I found this children’s book at a local yard sale. It reminded me of the ones I had as a toddler, though I don’t think I had one about a parakeet, only Woody Woodpecker. The story is quite simple. Young Timmy is “swinging gaily on a fence” one day (hmmm…) when his Aunt Susan comes [...]
