I believe this is the shield of the City of Krakow. But what’s going on around it is more interesting. There are thistles, oak leaves, sheaves of wheat, morning glory flowers, pine needles, and round symbols that look like Tibetan mandalas or the hex signs of the Amish. And the man’s costume looks truly like something from another world. I like the artistic style too, which is delicate and folkloric.

Barbie was THE revolutionary toy of the 1950s. Never before had there been a doll for little girls to play with that had a bust and hips. (Let’s not mention those world-weary, cocktail-hour eyes and come-hither pout.) Barbie also had more fashionable clothes in comparison to the jumpers and pinafores of baby dolls. But the miniature clothes were expensive.

So booklets like this were produced for doting parents or grandparents to knit their own (or the child, if she was clever.) The typeface that says TEEN AGE [sic] screams 1950s asymmetry and outrageousness, in a time when teen agers [sic] were seen as cutely primitive beings.

But the problem with the knitted clothes was that they were bulky and, let’s face it, dorky in comparison to the store-bought ones. Barbie in this picture looks like she wishes she were somewhere else. Perhaps she is daydreaming of GI Joe who would never wear a knit newsboy cap like Ken is doing.

Dresses fared better, because they looked like the boucle knits of the time. By the picture it was even possible to knit miniature gloves. That is Midge, Barbie’s best friend, on the right. comparing the two, I don’t know what Barbie saw in her. Even as a five-year-old I was embarrassed being seen with my cousins’ hand-me-down Midge doll.

In the 1976 my mom and I went on a trip to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. It had just opened that year. Among the exhibits for space exploration was a console where you could dial the conditions of a planet and see what kind of creature might live there. I was fascinated by all the different combination so took pictures.

This alien beast is a herbivore that lives on a cold world with normal gravity. Woolly rhino-ish with a hint of mastodon.

This butterfly-like carnivore lived on a low gravity world with a temperate climate.

With the advent of the internet, other people play this game, called speculative zoology or speculative biology for want of a better term.

The planet Furaha has many strange animals like these tubesharks.

A world called Snaiad feaures deadly carnivores with sexual organs in their jaws and mouths in their chests.

This pentapod flyer comes from Epona, a world near the end of its geological life.

But what about life on earth? If the dinosaurs had never gone extinct, creatures like this might inhabit the earth, courtesy of Dinosaur Central:

Just kidding
